If we were not wasting $$BILLIONS reinventing the wheeled truck and having it get blown up on roads we'd already have NEW CAPABILITIES for our M113 Gavin tracks--like visual, infared "thermal", and radar camouflage for when moving as well as roll-down camo when stationary:

Notice Saab Barracuda also has infared camouflage suits and 2-man self-standing tents for dismount infantry!

This video shows the mobile camouflage system (MCS) by Barracuda which can be easily applied to our very small M113 Gavins to make them even more excellent cavalry scout and light infantry-carrying tanks.

MCS is designed to protect armored vehicles during movement and in combat. The system utilizes different materials, for camouflage in the visual/near Infrared, thermal, and radar wavebands. Further enhancement of the system includes the application of heat transfer reduction materials, to conceal the heating of the vehicle by solar radiation.

The general approach of the MCS is to hide glossy or flat surfaces into non-glossy 3 dimensional surface structures, with color and near infrared values similar to the environmental condition of the region. Significantly recognizable parts of the vehicle, such as turret shapes and gun will also be concealed with contour disrupters. An ideal camouflage will also obstruct laser reflections to affect the enemy's range measurement accuracy.

The thermal and radar camouflage contributes to the elimination thermal or radar locking of heat seeking missiles and obstruct and disrupt target detection and tracking by ground or aerial weapons. Radar camouflage will also eliminate the detection by synthetic aperture radar.

The MCS incorporates Barracuda's Heat Transfer Reduction (HTR) concept which reduces solar loading on the surface of armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) by more than 50%. The HTR system consists of a bottom layer of material with significant insulating and heat resistance properties, on top of which is a special reflective layer to minimize heat radiation. The top layer consists of a camouflage net made of COVCAM material, which, along with providing the appropriate visual image suited to the operating environment, provides improved visual and near infrared properties and convection heat loss.
The MCS is fitted only to the turret top, front and sides, and hull frontal arc - not over the exhaust outlets and engine compartment, the principal source of most AFV "hot spots" which means signature reduction exhaust means need to be developed.

It is completely passive in nature and requires no crew maintenance, being securely fixed to the vehicle. Once removed, the MCS can be refitted by the crew within one hour.

"I was a 19D Scout for 11 years, the first six on 113s, then the piece of s**t Brads. For Scouts, it couldn't get worse than the Bradley....too big, too heavy, too loud, too complex, and too slow to keep up with the M1s it's supposed to support. A 113A3 runs rings around it, the only advantage a Brad has is firepower, but if you're a bigger target than a tank without the armor to take hits like a tank, a Brad's firepower doesn't mean a thing."

  • I think the brad can be upgraded, The A3 isnt too bad, too tall though, but a 3600 meter tow is hard to beat, that has a farther reach than the soviet tanks it was designed to fight against.

  • You have to STOP to shoot a 2nd Gen SACLOS TOW ATGM...the 15 mph slow moving firing doesn't work...you can improve a medium Bradley in many ways but it will never do what a M113 Gavin light track can do.

  • Impressive. The Swedes really are good in military technology. They don't have the billions that the US has, yet they turn out some state of the art military hardware. Not bad at all.

  • And the Swedish Defense Companies like Bofors and Saab all get INTERNATIONAL contracts from around the globe, incliding the USA.

They actually put out a good and effective product, unlike Colt.

  • Good stuff, how much is it? I'll like to purchase one for my car.

  • We dont use colt and havent for some time.

  • All you need now is a system for locating your camouflaged vehicle! ;)

  • So cool, the best there is :-)
