Sonata No.17 in D minor, op.31 no.2, Tempest, composed in 1802.

PART I : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZX-3k08UQQ
- Largo, Allegro

PART II : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dytk67EXkK0
- Adagio

PART III :
- Allegretto

The three sonatas of Beethoven's op.31 probably coincide with the drafting of his famous "Heiligenstadt Testament," in which he expresses despair at his increasing deafness.

  • Finally, a performance that gets this movement exactly "right!" I had despaired of ever hearing it correctly rendered, as many great and well-known pianists completely miss the mark with it; the only other one that is magnificent in my opinion is by Wilhelm Backhaus in his first monaural recording.
