Born in Pyongyang, Mr. Lee left as a refugee of the Korean War to South Korea at age 13 in 1950, with his father and brother, leaving his mother behind. Because of diplomatic tensions that continue today, Mr. Lee was only able to visit North Korea in 1989 to visit his mother's grave, too late to see his mother alive.
Saemsori shares his story to educate the American public about the need to have a safe, transparent channel for reunions brokered by the U.S. government and is working to introduce a comprehensive bill creating such a program for the more than 100,000 Korean Americans still waiting to contact their relatives.
