A song I wrote for my friend Louis who used to live in Hawaii. He always gives me a hard time when I say "Yukalaylee." (and rightfully so. I have since converted.) It's a song about willful ignorance, shameful parts of our country's past, the negative impact tourism can have on local ecosystems, and prejudice. Or if you prefer, it's a song about getting beat up. I'll post chords later if anyone wants them

Lyrics

Verse 1
I remember going to Hawaii
Nonstop flight from Whitebread, USA
Thought I knew a thing or two
After all I played the Uke
Got the tar beat out of me when someone heard me say

Chrous:
I say Yukalaylee
You say Ukulele
It doesn't matter how you say it
It only matters how you play it
I say Yukalaylee
You say Ukulele
I'm sure that we can all just get along

Verse 2
Bought some souvenirs and put my lei on
Made it to a luau dinner show
The man that beat me up was now my waiter
I blacked out as someone screamed haole you should go

Chrous:
I say Yukalaylee
You say Ukulele
It doesn't matter how you say it
It only matters how you play it
I say Yukalaylee
You say Ukulele
I'm sure that we can all just get along

Bridge
I think I understand, we overthrew your queen and gave you ferrel pigs
Paved paradise so folks could tell the Joneses 'bout their expensive trip
I apologize directly
I'll try and say that word correctly

Chrous:
I say Ukulele
You say Ukulele
I guess it matters how you say it
Just as much as how you play it
I say Ukulele
You say Ukulele
I guess that we can all just get along
And that's the end of this here little song

  • What does the "two bits" in that phrase refer to?

  • People used to take dollar bills and tear them into eight equal pieces for change. Two of those bits are equal to .25 cents.

  • AWESOME! What a great number...

    Fantastic entry

  • Thanks so much and thanks for having the challenge. I needed some motivation to get off my songwriting butt!

  • Genius. How long did it take you to write this?

  • A week or so? I don't remember exactly. I did sit down and write the verses one night though. Glad you liked the song.
