omg... i was lookin a reference in speed cos i swim 3km in one hour but ooomg haha im like stupi watching this world record.. i mean hes like 5.5 km/hr!!!! thats twice fast than me... omg... human been is just incredible!

In my view, this is the single greatest feat by a human being in the arena of aquatic sport. This is testified by the fact that the record has stood for virtually a decade, whilst every other swimming world record has been broken. This swim alone puts Hackett firmly amongst the pantheon of the planet's all-time elite athletes.

my personal best is 26:00 range!!! and I was in decent shape, swam 66 lengths non-stop and at a decent pace. HOLY CRAP HACKETT IS A GOD!

This was the first swimming event I ever watched as we got a TV right before it, I remember watching this race and thinking "holy crap, that's incredible". One of the most amazing swims I've ever seen, and it just gets more and more epic as the record gets older and older. Does anyone have the full video from above the water by any chance?

@lexsoft I think this particular record stands above all others is because it remained unbroken during the 'suit era'; a period when every other swimming world record was broken, often multiple times. There are of course other swims / records

@seismicevent How about Mary Meagher WR in women's 100m butterfly which stands for about 2 decades until being broken by Jeanny Thompson ? And her 200m butterfly WR which also holds for nearly 2 decades until Susie O Neill broke it ?
