Steam Freight at Strasburg!!

For the first time in a long time, a revenue steam-powered freight train was operated in the USA, and Big Jim Video Productions was on hand to witness the historic occasion. Every Wednesday and Friday morning in July and August of 2012, the Strasburg Railroad, in Strasburg, PA, will be operating their normal freight trains with steam engines instead of using diesel power. This gives both railfans and the general public the very rare opportunity to see what it was like when steam engines ruled the railroads, when they powered both freight and passenger trains. Watch as Norfolk and Western 4-8-0 #475 pulls it's consist from Leaman Place (Paradise), PA, and even does switching around in Strasburg's yard, before pulling the day's normal hourly trains. I stayed around to video those runs too, and that video will come later. Enjoy this rare look at steam-powered freight in Pennsylvania!

On weekdays from May through October/November, on Wednesdays and Fridays, they'll use steam to bring in the freight from the Norfolk Southern interchange at Leaman Place. :)

Are they still running the freight trains using steam power? Methinks doing that regularly would be a real good way to attract more people to the railroad. And railfans as well, heck I'd drive through the night to get up to Strasburg if I knew I could catch a steam engine with revenue freight this summer!
