The New Face of Vinyl is a project that explores why young people across the United States have started a digital "devolution" by becoming vinyl record enthusiasts. Throughout the country, young people are buying more and more vinyl, thus getting back to the analog roots of listening to music. Collecting and listening to vinyl has become a unique experience for many teens and young adults throughout the world who have chosen to explore the once forgotten black wax. Photographer Ben Meadors and writer Owen McCafferty are setting out to discover what vinyl means to these enthusiasts, and will create a full color photo book along with a narrative to tell the story.

I began collecting records around the time I ended year 9 in high school.

At that time my tastes were centered mainly around trance, UK hardcore, house and hip hop. I think in the space of three years I'd built up a collection of

two or three hundred dance and hip hop records. These days my tastes centre around funk, metal, blues rock, r&b and quiet storm.

  • good luck guys....always welcome at RetroElectronics and Audiolab and BStreet studios

  • @farewelltokings Help us find out! -Owen M.

  • Cool! I've loved vinyl since I was very young! I, however, think that the vinyl renaissance that is occuring with our generation is only a temporary fad. I could be wrong though. BTW... I love the genesis and peter gabriel references in your video. (Nursery Cryme and Gabriel's "car" album.)

  • AHAHAHAHAAHAHAAAA...

  • the music nowadays completely sucks except for electronic music. I like records because it takes you back to the early days. I can get records for .50 and .25 and the records I buy, not many people will ever hear again.

  • yha, even thogh i love reels of tape, records are the older format. i like this project becuase it might spark new intrest in reels of tape. i dont know.

  • I guess I should be the first to comment! I have been collecting records since I was 11, and I currently own over 500 discs and I am 19 years old. At first I just loved records for their aesthetic value and the feeling of watching the music spin in front of me, but when I was 16, I started to listen REALLY carefully, and realized that records sounded more energetic, more clear. At the same time, a new goodwill opened and I had easier access to new records.
