@oren011 Ponnelle's productions were always heavy on frippery and ornament. I wouldn't call them garish myself, but I have always found the excessive costuming and florid decor distracting. Especially in early music like Monteverdi, which is, in its way, so simple, and oddly modern.

@tonecrafter55 Not the first opera! if im not mistaken the first opera is from Jacopo Peri! But L'Orfeo is a masterpiece and Monteverdi took the opera to another range

Sheer magic. Astounding it took me so long to hear this, the first opera, from 400 years ago! Monteverdi casts an even longer shadow than I'd thought.

I like the film direction instead. It's like being between a movie and in teather at the same time. It's a simple and spontaneous, exactly like the music (not at the same level though :D)
