TRANSCRIPT:

I'm Kevin Gaither, the Director of Middle Market Sales for Business.com, and today we're going to talk about SEO, Search Engine Optimization, and how this can help your business, and I'm going to help give you two tips and tactics that you can implement today for improved SEO results.

This is going to be important for you because there's over 16 billion searches done a month on the major search engines and over 75 percent of the users click on the organic, or the free ads, on these major search engines. But best of all, if you do this properly, this is free marketing for your business.

Search engine optimization is the process of striving to get your website listed highly within the organic or the free results. On most major search engines, when you do a search, the paid ads occur at the top and on the right-hand well, and the free or the organic ads occur in the main well underneath those ads. As you might imagine, this is quite a competitive endeavor to get your site to rank highly within these results. The two things you need to take into consideration are relevance and authority.

Relevance is how well your web page content matches the search that the user put in. The search engines take into consideration things, such as your page title tag, as well as, of course, the webpage content that's actually on your site.

Authority is how important the search engines think your webpage is relative to the search that was placed. The two components that baked into authority are the quantity of inbound links that point to your website from other websites, as well as the authority of those websites that have links that point to your site. So, let me give an example. If I created a website today, and I called up my buddy down the street, and I asked him to put a link on his site pointing to my site. Then I also call up the Wall St. Journal and ask them to put a link on their site pointing to my site, hopefully, we can all agree that the Wall St. Journal has a little bit more authority than my buddy down the street. My goal here is as an advertiser is to get the highest quantity of inbound links from high authority sites, such as the Wall St. Journal. If I'm able to do this, I'm going to get improved SEO results for my website.

Here are two tips and tactics that you can implement today for improved SEO results. The first thing you need to do is pay attention to your page title tag. In Internet Explorer, the page title tag is that blue bar at the top of your browser that houses keyword content. A mistake that I usually see advertisers make is placing their company name or worse yet, "Welcome to Company Name," followed by keyword content. I recommend you place your most important keywords first and then additional content thereafter, such as additional keywords or your company name. If you do this, you can help your site rank higher in the organic results.

The second thing you need to do is create great relevant content on your website, and the first step in this process is developing a list of keywords that you think your users are going to use when they search for your business on the web. Once you've compiled that list, then you need to create relevant content around those keywords and put it on your site in the form of whitepapers or more commonly, blogs. If you do these things, you'll immediately improve your search engine optimization results.

I'm Kevin Gaither with Business.com. Today, we talked about search engine optimization and how it can help your business, and I gave you two tips that you can implement today for improved SEO results. Here are the main points we covered.
