why would you take out features of a game prior to release? If you didnt like controlling the other characters you didnt have to.

I don't even remember. Whatever was considered "Normal" difficulty I played on that. I very rarely play the Easy or Hard and Expert difficulties on most games.

because you really need your team to beat this game on insane

3) of the games few faults, I felt this was it. Yea you can control them, but barely, and most of the time they wouldn't listen to you anyway, especially if there are enemies surrounding you. Thankfully their AI isn't completely stupid, and they usually will not run ahead of you and will stay in one place unless you move forward and most of the time will not get in your way. So I almost never gave them orders.
