Entry from: Pineda de Mar, Spain
Entry Title: "GR92 from Platja d"

Entry:

"Today we arrived at our base for exploring Barcelona, a campsite about 50 km away and an hour train ride in, in a small beach town called Pineda de Mar. We planned to camp closer, but when we discovered that the campground we had in mind was charging high-season prices this weekend because of a big motorcycle race in a nearby town, we opted for other accommodations. So, it boiled down to either 45 euro per night or 14 euro per night, and only an extra twenty minutes commute each way to the big city. Now that we have no jobs, the decision was really a no-brainer! We had a nice surprise at this campsite too. The lady at reception (I think the daughter of the owner) was super friendly when we asked if she knew a mechanic. We are still having some problems with our water pump (slow coolant leak), so we have been trying to find someone good and cheap. She was immediately on the phone and had us in a shop within an hour to get Freda looked over. She even led us all the way there so we didn't get lost. At the shop she also acted as translator. We had to leave the van there for a bit so Carmen drove us back to the campground, then offered us the use of a bungalow to rest or clean ourselves up. She was amazingly helpful and one of those people that helps to restore your faith in people! Once they were done looking at the van she drove us back to pick it up. As it is a Friday today, not much can get done until Monday, so we will have to keep you posted on the outcome of this. Last Wednesday was a pretty low-key day. We managed to get a few errands done, including buying new tubes and a pump for the bikes (and replacing them all - bloody thieves!) and installing a mosquito net for our "kitchen" window, to get some fresh air at night while keeping the bugs out. It's sad how fast time flies, even when you're not doing anything. Before we knew it the day was over, and we've now been gone for over a month! This trip will be over all too soon. Yesterday was a great day. We hiked a portion of the GR92, a trail which snakes along the coast hugging the waterline closely, from Platja d'Aro to Sant Feliu. The path has stunning vistas of the turquoise Mediterranean waters, taking you past hidden coves and secluded beaches, and passing by some beautiful villas clinging to the rocks above. We ate lunch on a high cliff, overtop the red, craggy rocks that signify the Costa Brava. The trails here in Spain (and the rest of Europe I'm sure) are exquisite and very well marked. As long as you know what marker to look for, you don't even need a map. At each junction, there are X's telling you which way to not go, and a proper marker showing the right way. It's a really great system. The hike in total took us about 4.5 hours, the last hour to Sant Feliu being the toughest, party because of our weary legs and feet, and partly because the path went up and down like a yo-yo. After exploring Sant Feliu a little, we opted to take the bus back to our campsite. Unfortunately for us we missed our stop and ended up walking an additional, unplanned 45 minutes or so uphill - a most unwelcome detour! But we rewarded ourselves with a big barbeque dinner, sangria and beer back at camp."
