Took my 10 year old and 8 year old boys up to Lake Solitude. We camped overnight at the group campsite about 1 1/2 mile below the lake. My brother and his 13 and 11 year old boys swam out to the island at Lake Solitude. 42 degrees! One of the best trips we've had. Absolutely beautiful with all the cascades coming down every 100 yards or so.
Yes this is a day hike if you are in reasonable shape. It is more easily done if you take the boat across Jenny Lake rather than hiking around the lake. This video shows the view on the return trip back from the Cascade Forks to Jenny Lake. The two mountains with the notch between them are Mt. Owens on the left and the Grand Teton on the right. If you are in good shape you can go to Lake Solitude and back in a day.

Truly breathtaking!!! Is this trail (up to this section) doable as a day hike?

Backpacked with my two sons in July of 2008 and camped in the North Fork. It cannot get much prettier than Cascade Canyon on this side of heaven.
