Here's my attempt at doing a brief video lesson on how to get started playing old time banjo in the Grayson County,VA style.
I suggest using your index finger if possible to play, and remember to always pick downward, not up.
Hope it is of some help to some of you folks

  • Looking for lesson #2 Kilby. Lesson one was great.

  • Thanks for doing this & keep 'em coming. As well as a good primer to clawhammer stroke it's a great counterpoint and demonstration of the nuances that are different from other [better promoted/more popular?] Galax area styles of downpicking.

  • Middle finger worked best for me Kilby, more power and better tone than I got with the index finger. I tell my students to try middle first, then index finger and settle on one or the other.
