Labour shadow business secretary John Denham tells us what the coalition should be doing with businesses and the economy.

We've had 13 years of Labour telling us, and look where we are - a record breaking £4Trillion deficit, out of control public sector spending, out of control borrowing, out or control banking sector... the list is endless to Labour's economic destruction of the UK.

Labour have ALWAYS hated small businesses (they don't give MPs back handers to write laws), so they are dying. They hate people that work for themselves because they are not beholden to the state, so they cannot be controlled easily.

Labour should look at their 13 years of destruction before preaching to others on the UK economy.

Recorded from Sky News, 29 May 2011.

  • How can the Government help the economy? The answer is so simple: LEAVE US ALONE!!!

  • It doesn't matter how many "skilled" jobs you create if you don't educate and inspire the youth, or systemeticly replace them with already trained foreigners.

It's time to stop brainwashing our kids and educate them instead... That done, you have to then ionspire the youth be having a society that people WANT to be a part of, and when I look around this multicultural hell hole, I'm not surprised that our kids don't want anything to do with it.

  • Wake up people, haven't you realised yet? You are free to think what they want you to think. Watch the 'news' on different channels, on the same day; and see the same stories, with different reporters, asking the same questions, and getting the same answers from the same people. The fiction on television is the same. They're are called 'programmes' because they program you. Your brain is like a biological computer. Type into your brain 'ACCESS DENIED' and WAKE UP!!!!

  • @coltrane1966 laissez-nous faire!

  • IS it me or is the BBC more of a labour supporter and SKY a TORY supporter

  • They tell people to find jobs or there benifits will be cut or stopped at the same time they are putting people out of work and making huge cuts in the people who are working pay check so if they are putting people on the dole because of closures how the hell do they expect the people allready on the dole to find jobs DOH !! crazy goverment's.

  • At least he acknowledges labours failings on economic diversity (being too reliant on the gambling (sorry, "financial sevices") sector) and education. Shame they didn't do anything about it 10 years ago.

  • ...What John Denham is also referring to (but in a more pleasant sounding way) is government subsidies to private businesses which does nothing but distort the markets and increase inflate prices for the consumer. The best way to grow markets is to liberalise them as much as possible.

I agree with you, the current government are more or less, just as bad as the last and I doubt 6 months in future we will get growth.

  • @sopranosfan87 Government working with business isn't how industry and economies grow. It helps those those businesses who are in part of the deal and lobbying government, it helps them grow, and quite often into monopoly corporations, but it doesn't foster competition and open the market for growth.

  • How on earth is John Denham talking fantasy politics here. I think the 'biased' pathetic description of this interview sais more about Liarpoliticians than it does against John Denham. He is just talking sense. All the tory-led government does is talk about cuts cuts cuts. Note Obamas speech the other day, and also other world leaders, they talk about growth jobs and investment. But this government we have is utterly useless at such things and dreadful at running the economy. Just look at growth

  • You would of thought it might be a good idea for a shadow business secretary to actually have worked in a business at least once?
