This week on Ignition, Carlos Lago revisits the BMW M5 to test out something that was missing from the first test: a manual transmission. Is the 6-speed stick shift better than the standard automatic twin-clutch version?

Ignition appears every Monday on the Motor Trend youtube channel.

Heel and toe driving maybe? The clutch and stick provide much more possibilities for control of throttle, subsequently weight transfer and torque use of the engine. Driving a stick normally is easy, driving it like a pro is much more difficult and satisfying than automatic. That is why I prefer it, and why I dont have a car with power steering either.

Where are you getting a car without power steering that isn't old as hell or a kit car. I can see this requirement for a weekend car (I guess), but what do you drive for your daily driver?

that's a bit of a generalisation. I drive a car with a manual, no ABS, no ESC, no power steering, no traction control, no ECU, etc, etc and I consistently prefer than other cars with such features, manual or no. I don't know why direct injection was mentioned. There are still plenty of people who dislike all of those things, hence why the noble M600 is becoming an icon

Manuals are outdated tech. The advantages of being able to keep both hands on the wheel at all times and instant gear change times far outweigh the pleasure of changing gear manually in my opinion

I find that usually only people who have not owned a DCT car say they prefer a manual transmission. Hell i even preferred the SMG automated manual in my previous E46 to a manual, but the DCT is perfect for the current car

If you know the car well enough you don't have to guess where the revs are at.
