Strange as it may seem, there is no "e" after the 'd' in Wedgwood, I suppose that over the family history it got lost somewhere!
A bottle kiln is a big brick structure which looks like a bottle. The "raw" clay pots were put in these and then fires were lit around the base, the smoke issuing from a chimney at the top. It was usually dirty and smelly!
Yes, the area is known as The Potteries. And of course such big names as Wedgwood started there - although their factory is now at Barlaston, a few miles south of Stoke on Trent.
When I went to live there in 1955 the whole area was usually covered in "smog" from the "bottle kilns" in which the pots were fired but with the advent of electric kilns it is now a clean air area.
The Fivepenny Piece sang many good songs but this is one of the very best!

@31GeeGee
Sorry about this, but shouldn't 'Wedgwood' have an 'e' in it?
What's a "bottle kiln?" Is it owt like a chimenea. Did I spell that right?
Thank you.
