i agree with you on everything there, but johnny cash has fantastic song structures:) simplicity doesn't mean they're not clever and well thought of. i agree with you about sound and feel too, but when a song is perfectly arranged, and every part melts into the other it's just brilliant, and i think all the mentioned bands are a masterclass in that

I don't listen to tool/mastodon because of their song structure... it just sounds good. I think music is all about conveying a feeling, no matter which time sig or structure is used. one could argue that johnny cash "sucks" because of his "simple" song structure, but the truth is that the guy's a genius and his songs are full of feeling... no one is "cool" or "smart" for listening to "alternative" music... there are dumbass fans in every genre of music (aka the people who marked me down) lol

shunudda got marked down for that! log are great, and almost as good in their structuring as mastodon. mastodon, tool, melvins, lightning bolt, devin townsend are the best. anyone who doesn't agree with my opinion is obviously a retard... gawd.

mastodon just focuses on progressive song structure aspect of metal while tool focuses more on experimental time signatures.
