Although she is not always in the tabloids like other celebrities, Martina McBride is one of my favorite country singers, so I thought I would profile her in my next installment of celebrity substance. McBride has her hand in various charities acting as spokesperson. Most notably, she works with domestic violence as a spokesperson for various campaigns and organizations. She got involved with domestic violence charities because of her fans. After releasing the song Independence Day which discusses domestic violence, McBride said she received many letters from fans talking about their experiences.
I know from the mail I receive that domestic violence is one of the greatest concerns that women in America face said McBride When I think of how difficult dating was, I can only image how confusing it must be for people today, not only teens, but their parents
Most recently, McBride has partnered with the National Teen Dating Abuse Hotline and loveisrespect.org to promote a new campaign called My Time to Shine which a reference to her new album Shine. She and her teenage daughter Delaney have joined the campaign to get the word out about teen dating abuse and educating both teens and parents on ways to stay safe. McBride has 3 daughters, one of which is a teenager, so she decided to focus on teen dating violence in order to ensure her daughters and other young girls were not hurt by domestic violence.
A lot of teenage girls will be first dating and they'll think Oh he doesn't want me to see my friends. He just wants me all to himself. Isn't that sweet?' Or 'Oh, he's just being protective. Isn't that sweet?' said McBride And then it turns into something else and it's controlling. They don't recognize that until it's too late. So it's an ongoing education that you have to give young girls, I think."
Here are some tips McBride has for parent with teenagers from loveisrespect.org:
Partial proceeds of McBrides Shine all Night tour will benefit loveisrespect.org. The tickets are available at ticketsforcharity.com. The tour kicks off November 20th and features both Martina McBride and Trace Atkins.
McBride also partnered with the Make a Wish Foundation in 2004 to grant the wish of Zackery, a little boy living with muscular dystrophy.
McBride host the Nashville YWCA Celebrity Auction every year during the CMA Festival. YWCA stands for the Young Womens Christian Assocation and, according the website, helps families leave abusive households and start new lives. They also provide free GED education to men and women and mentor middle school girls in some of Nashville's toughest neighborhoods. The YWCA exists to educate, encourage and break down those barriers that perpetuate racism, violence and hopelessness.
