Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, UK - Masson Mills Working Textile Museum houses a unique and comprehensive collection of authentic working textile machinery.

Built in 1783 as the showpiece mills of Sir Richard Arkwright, the inventor of the water frame and 'Father of the Factory System', when at the height of his power.

Masson Mills were the oldest mills in the world in continuous production until 1991, and now the old machines will work again, thus continuing the tradition of enterprise.

  • @revgeorgemurray Thanks for your comment! I wonder and tried to imagine what it must be like to be a worker. It was cold and smelled oily when I was there. But more intriguing was the Museum's warning advising visitors to limit the time spent in this working machinery section due to the noise level. Others have told me that it did affect workers hearing. I find it hypnotic-sounding.

  • I used to work on those spinning frames and also on the W-3 Crompton-Knowles looms.
