This game is one of the first games that had Quick Time Events.
Back then people found it strange and unique that you had to press buttons in a cutscene to interact with it and change the outcome of the cutscene.
A precursor of what was to come; it wasn't until Resident Evil 4 did this several years later that it really started to reside in games today.
Shenmue's "strangeness" back then is what makes modern game's today, the open environment, open interactivity, etc. - ahead of it's time.
