I think now that the reason people love the '86 version so much is because of nostalgia goggles. I didn't grow up with Journey to the West, and I don't find the original to be as great as all my Chinese friends do. I don't think the acting in the '86 one is any better than this one, and I think the fighting in this one is a little more interesting. The script in the '86 one may be better, my Chinese isn't good enough to critique that fairly. I prefer this one, but not by much.

@cellestiall yes I totally agree. Actually i think the stone age technology of the original series made it what it is. A legend and a beautiful memory of my childhood :D

@SaisenseiHQ The 2011 version looks like a trailer from "The Lord of The King" rather than an ancient Chinese series.

@yuepeng209 The special effects in this is of course better but acting wise the monkey king was quite awful compared to the 80s one. This monkey is like hes got OCDlol. Check out the 2011 version trailer on my channel cos i think the 2011 'might' be the best.

@fpsisfun I bought it on DVD while in China. It's Mandarin with Chinese subtitles. I don't think there's an official release with English subtitles. You can get all 52 episodes on a 3 disc set for cheap from Amazon China, just search for "新版西游记(3DVD9 简装版)" You may need to also get a region 9 dvd player to watch it, or download software so your computer can convert it.
