Episode I
PRECREASING THE MODEL

It is a period of paper cuts
and mountain folds. From a
square piece of paper,
Fumiaki Kawahata emerged
to design Jedi Master Yoda.

In a stunning move, aprentice
Mari Michaelis made a video
chronicling the many moves
needed to recreate the Jedi
Master Yoda.

When completed, you can
impress all in your empire
with your mastery of origami.
Try not. Do, or do not. There
is no try. May the force be....

The paper can be any size - so long as it is square.

Sorry for the stupid questions but: how big is the paper (in cm) and is some kind of special origami paper or can you do it with regular paper?

The paper I used in the video was 25 cm (about 10 inches) and was standard origami paper (kami). When folding a model for the first time, the bigger the paper, the easier it usually is to fold. It probably could be folded with light weight copy paper but it would be more difficult to fold with. If you have gift wrapping paper, you could use that. Some wrapping paper is very good to fold with, just test it out. Just cut it into a square and start folding!

In 2008 I made the first Yoda video and re-diagrammed the model with permission from Fumiaki Kawahata to make it easier for people to learn to fold. Jo chose to make his own version last year. He didn't "copy" from me - he just wanted to make his own tutorial. This is a complicated model and videos from different channel's perspective helps folders. Getting the job done is what it's all about!

Because these Yoda videos include sounds and snips of music that were created by Lucas Arts, not by me, and there is a debate about "fair use" of these sounds. All videos on the Marigami channel include original music and sound effects, and some music used with explicit permission.
