that bridge must be a trip to go over (much less see from the ground too)

Those "L" shaped engineers windshields that the Espee ran really did give good visibilty. Too bad they were too expensive for them to keep.

What was the lead unit you were riding in?I noticed it still had the L shaped front window.......

I bet that was scary!

Thanks for the video! It was nice seeing the Huey from a different perspective. I used to have to drive over 2x a day and hated that trip after a while. I moved after Katrina but went back this past summer to see my daughter who is in college there and they were doing extensive repair work on the bridge. Bout gave my Mom a heart attack trying to drive over it . I should have driven I guess.

how long is this bridge?

This is from the NOPB website: The Huey P. Long Bridge, completed in 1935, is the longest and highest steel railroad bridge in the United States. It is 4.35 miles long from abutment to abutment. It is a combination rail - highway structure and provides a four-lane highway, two one-way lanes on each side of a double track railroad. Plans to widen the highway portion of the bridge are being discussed.

What's the grade of this bridge? The loco seems to be struggling
jimmyl22 3 years ago
A 1982 SP Track chart lists the grade as 1.25%. The bridge is owned and the railroad portion maintained by the NOPB (New Orleans Public Belt). A 1992 SP timetable states that trains exceeding 7500 tons going over the bridge must have a helper engine with maximum horsepowe to be determined by the NOPB. Also trains more than 5000 tons should keep acceleration to 5 mph or less while any portion of the train is still ascending the bridge. The max speed limits on the bridge were listed at 15-20 mph.
