I don't know if it's been released in english but the situation here is the following: the result of the performance is in Gayarre's hands but just before going on stage he learns that his mother has died through a message on a paper, so he begins to sing and his voice expresses all the pain of such a sad feelings. At the end he's succesful and the critics say that that was the best tribute possible to a mother died.

Una furtiva lágrima es el aria que me enamoró de la ópera. Antes me gustaba... pero un día vi en TV . Y quedé tildada!!! Para siempre enamorada!!! ¡¡¡por favor!!! sin ánimo de competencia Pavarotti-Carreras y otro muchísimos maravillosos tenores que, ¡¡¡gracias a Dios!!! cantaron para nuestro deleite. Es sólo por compartir aquel momento mágico -como me gusta llamarlos- en que solas, con mi tía Miría, nos miramos las dos con la boca abierta y lágrimas en los ojos.

@alfonsorama1, queria decir 'a ver'. Y abundando en el tema. Hay maneras de meterse y 'despreciar' a los grandes tenores. Cada uno tiene sus simpatias y hay que respetarlas, nos guste o no. Hay mucho 'anti' y poco criterio serio. Tampoco se puede estar dando listas de '30 tenores mejores que' a diestro y siniestro para contraponer cada vez que se mencione a Domingo o Pavarotti. Estos dos para mi entre los 5 o 10 de la historia, te pongas como te pongas, que te veo venir. Hay que joderse¡

My copy of this video has English sub titles but I wish the movie would come out on DVD. What a beautiful rendering of Una Furtiva Lagrima by Jose Carreras and wonderful acting too. Having been handed a note saying his mother has died just before going on to sing this, Jose Carreras has to sing this as Gayarre would have done after hearing such dreadful news. Of course Jose Carreras had lost his own mother when he was in his late teens. Bravo! Thanks inmylife9.

Geez. This is ironic. As a fan of Jose Carreras knows, Carreras himself had lost his mother in real life, at the age of eighteen. :( I don't know how he was able to keep his emotions under control during this scene; he was probably thinking of his mother.
