On Saturday, October 10th, the African continent will join together with the Pope and students in Rome in order to pray the rosary. In this manner, African students -- whether in Rome or in Africa via satellite link from nine different countries -- will participate in special way in the Synod of Bishops. They are very excited about this initiative and it is a motivation for them to give thanks to God. The chaplain of African students in Rome explains:“The African students here and also the African university community at home in our continent are very enthusiastic about this event. In all the preparations, in all the messages that come to me when I mention these events for the first time, we are giving glory to God for this great opportunity that he has given to us. It is going to be a moment of grace because all Africa, especially our young people, will be united in prayer with the Vicar of Christ, invoking our Lady, who is the Seat of Wisdom and also the protector of Africa, to sustain us and be the champions of evangelization in our continent.”To express their joy and pride, the students will lead a vigil of hymns before the recitation of the rosary. African students in Rome have been gathering three times a week since mid-September to prepare the choir so as to liven up the vigil.“After we received the announcement that it would be the African students who would organize the rosary, which will take place on the 10th of this month, we formed groups to call together all of the Africans. At the beginning we were twenty, now we are more than a hundred.”After their first gathering in St. Peter’s Square in order to thank the Pope for his trip to Africa on March 29th, 2009, this will be the second gathering of African students in Rome this year. These are experiences they hope to repeat.
