Notice he says the COMBATIVE WAY. but, In karate , ALL attacks are designed to hurt your attacker. A spear hand thrust can penetrate your assailant if performed properly. Armed or unarmed, That person is trying to harm you. You have to defend yourself. Pay attention to the techniques used in katas. They are all DEADLY. If he who wears a karate gi are attacked, would it be wrong for he to use his belt as a weapon? Karate is not all empty handed.
