Last year at this time, Butterscotch (9 yr old Sheltand Pony) was down with founder with sinking for the 2nd time in 6 months, despite following all of the vet's reccomendations for feeding and use of Bute, meds, etc after his first founder. We were considering euthanasia, when an internet aquaintance directed me to the Equine Cushings Yahoo Group, where I learned about Insulin Resistance (IR), how to diagnose and control it. Thanks to running the proper bloodwork, following the group's diet protocol, and a 2 week natural trimming schedule, today Butterscotch is in wonderful health and is 100% sound, no sign of ever having foundered, and is back on a regular trim schedule. He will continue to eat a low NSC (Non-Structured Carbohydrate) diet for the rest of his life.
This video is dedicated to Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD, and all the wonderful people on the Equine Cushings list who selflessly give of their time and experience to help save the lives of metabolically challenged horses.
