This tutorial shows you some basic as well as advanced concepts for building a slime farm.
With some planning, you should be able to build a farm of any size using the stuff shown here.

UPDATE NOTES (1.0.0 Release)
----------------------
- looks like they fixed the suffocating technique I showed at around 5:30. While it's still possibly to make the farm two high (and the streams two wide etc.) the efficiency should be less than half of what it used to be, because big slimes won't spawn at all anymore on two high floors. So I suggest building the three high variant, which I introduce at 6:30 in the video.

- height limit for slime spawning was raised to 40 (from 16), allowing you to build much more floors than before in one chunk. Makes it easier to avoid bedrock, too.

Spawning
----------------------
Keep in mind that legit spawning is very rare, so you don't need to overcomplicate it, unless you lit the area around you to provent other hostiles from spawning.

Finding the Chunks (Mod&Online Tool)
----------------------
Go to http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/397835-find-slime-spawning-chunks/ to find the right chunks for your farm. Contains link for mod and online tool.
If you don't know what a chunk is yet, see http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Chunks .

Simple Farm, includes another method to keep slimes alive without ladders. I'd suggest something like this if you just want to cover your sticky piston needs:

Suggestions
----------------------
777static777 made a comprehensive tutorial covering some more basics. I'd suggest taking a look at it especially if you haven't built a canal-based mob farm yet.

Also, take a look at the channel/video linked in the credits.

Ethoslab recently started his own slime farm. Also very comprehensive and explains a lot of the spawning behaviour in greater detail.

  • This model works very well in SSP, but in SMP, slimes are pretty glitchy. They like to jump around and get stuck in blocks, especially once they get into the water or hit a wall. Some of them make it to my collection area, but somehow the drops glitch out and I can't pick them up. Still looking for a solution other than running in and hitting them with swords.

  • @SujanraAcoma Well, in my experience, slimes behave the same in SMP. However, there are synchronization issues leading to slimes being rendered in the wrong location client-side (eg on the ceiling instead of in the water). But this shouldn't concern your farm as everything happens automatically. So if there's a glitch leading to slimes getting stuck, I think it's in your farm.

  • @SujanraAcoma Quick addition: As slimes can't move in water like other mobs, it's essential that your water streams are flawless. Most importantly, they should always flow in the right direction and never be higher than one (except for drowners). I even used drops to change direction and avoid diagonal streams as these sometimes caused multiple slimes to get stuck. And remember that the movement you see in SMP can be misleading. Youll see what I mean if you test it in SP.

  • Thumbs this up so people know they can spawn at layer 40 and below now!

  • Also if you had a 2x2 of slime chunks and were in creative, can you make them all flow to the center and drop them then bring out under the trap ?

  • Im gonna try this as an xp farm. Any suggestions for a "mob softener"

  • @SujanraAcoma but i dont want a mod... i just want it work like before the update. i would go on the website and type my cords in and it showed me which chunks were slimes

  • @fuckerikbockenstette If you install Rei's minimap mod, there's a setting to show slime chunks.
