Need for Speed 3 released by EA in september 1998, running on a P233MMX with a 3DFX Voodoo1 Graphics card PC from 1996/1997.
Game details are medium to high.

The performance is quite good for the most part. What eats up the most FPS is the sky if it's set to high detail. Considering that users had access to the Pentium II at much higher clock speeds and Voodoo² (SLI) graphics cards when the game was released in 1998, this late 1996 system is doing quite well.

Recorded with a low budget Aiptek AHD Camcorder, which didn't focus correctly, so the image is slightly blurry. There's also a light from the background on the screen, I'll try and fix these issues for later videos.

Detailed System Specs:
intel Pentium P55C 200MMX@233MHz
64MB 60ns 72pin EDO RAM
Asus P55T2P4 Rev 3.10 Mainboard
Miro Highscore 3D with 3DFX Voodoo1 and 6MB RAM
Matrox Mystique with 4MB RAM
Creative SoundBlaster AWE32
Controller is a Microsoft Sidewinder Pad

I know I can't drive, haven't played this in years, but it's a lot of fun.

  • Would a Geforce 5200 video card with a 2.54 ghz intel P4 play this?

  • @11matt555 Barely ;)

  • @mystftg Ok. Just wondering because my main computer (GTX460, 3.2 ghz AMD Quad) has no support for it so it runs very slow but I have enough parts laying around to just about build another computer.

  • @11matt555 Hm I was sort of kidding with my reply. I guess modern systems don't have compatibility modes for these old games anymore. Especially with multicore CPUs and 64Bit operating systems, compatibility for old games has really gone downhill.

I'd recommend building an old system with Win2K or XP (at most) and maybe installing a 3DFX wrapper to help with GPU compatibility. That should work pretty good.

  • Will this run well on my Diamond 3dfx Voodoo1 4MB card?

  • @RkivUnderground I think the Diamond Voodoo1 (or almost all standard Voodoo1 cards for that matter) will run it well.

With 4MB the game is said to run terribly slow. But I haven't tested it with my Diamond V1, maybe it'll work.

My Voodoo1 is a miro Highscore 3D which has 6MB of RAM, allowing some, well, a few, games to run on this computer which won't work with a 4MB model.

  • Sweet, that brings back memories... :-)

Nice performance, especially for such an oldschool system. I really like the idea of a "retro machine"!

Your driving skills could be improved though. :-D

  • kick ass music!

  • i have an old nvidia geforce 2 graphic card with 64 MB, and the game looks amazing

  • hehe, respect the classics :)

  • I still play this game :P Love it. It's got some scratches on it and stops every now and then but it still works.

  • @Juppie902 the 10kb ram might be too little =p I had a Matrox G200 with 8mb ram and it run just fine. with the 0.3 ghz as you said lol.

  • @adroitgenius2 I was asking if it was compatible. I have a GTX460 in my main comp that is too powerful to run it.

  • @11matt555 of course it would even if was one of those crippled down ones with a 64bit memory bus. the fx 5200 came out in 2003 and is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more technologically advanced and faster than voodoo voodoo 2,3. ur comp should play it at max settings for hells sake this is only a direct x 6 game

  • @mystftg Well if my memory is correct, then I think the Geforce 5200 is the card I used to play NFS3 on my first computer. It was the first game I ever played. The system im building is going to use that 5200. I'm building it to play some of my older games that wont work on vista anymore and to run a small minecraft server off of it.

  • @MGazT If you dont like the game why are looking up videos of it?
