1st, squatting is how humans are evolved to do it, it more completely evacuates your bowels.
this means that squatting leaves less fecal matter inside you, and decreases predisposition to IBS, colon cancer, and related diseases.
secondly, alot of people who aren't too fat aren't comfortable sitting somewhere that everyone else's bare ass has touched.
the "hole" is the same thing as a regular toilet, but it's lower down, there's a "hole" in western toilets too.

Actually, I think the Iranain toilets are not as gross as the ones you use in the west. Here is why I think Iranian toilets are actually better and much more higienic than your toilets:
1- In an Iranian toilet, you don't have to put your butt where someone else has put theirs before! 2-The squat position helps the intestines do...well, their thing better if you know what I mean. 3-We use water and toilet papers for washing, which is much more hygenic than using only toilet papers. :)

that happened to me also few years ago... i had to use the toilet and i didn't know how to use it so i asked my mom to remind me. I haven't used the iranian toilet for about 10 years.
