What is Ani Manthan?
The process of kindling fire thru friction of the sacred wood is called Agni Manthan. This is the method agni is prepared for Yagnya since the ancient times. The sacred Arani consists of three pieces of wood.

Parts of Arani:
1. The bottom arani the block at the bottom, the middle arani the shaft that rotates and the top arani that holds it in place. Fire is produced from by churning the shaft in the indent in the bottom arani. The base of Arani is made with 18l x9b x6h inches long Arani wood. A small indent is in made that is 3 inches deep that is the female emblem of Shakti.

2. The middle arani is a shaft 18 inch long and 3 inches in diameter with a ¾ inch nail on the top.

3. The top arani is a flat piece of wood that is pressed against the nail to keep the shaft in the indent in the bottom arani.

Process of Manthan:
The middle 3 inch part of the shaft is called Deva Yoni, where the rope is twisted around and pulled with both hands making the shaft turn in rotary movement. Right hand pulls first and then the left. Before and after Gayatri and Agni mantras from the vedas are chanted. The fire is produced into the dry grass that is placed in the Shakti indent in the bottom arani. The ignited dry grass is placed in a copper vessel and powdered cow dung let it kindle. Once the fire gets strong it is carefully transferred to the yagnya vedi with veda mantras and sprinkling of water with kusa grass.
