So, basically, the ratio is like a big scoop shovel and the threshold is the handle of the shovel, so when the kick drum yanks the threshold back the shovel scoops the sound back into the compressor. Of course, this depends on your ratio settings, the higher the ratio, the harder the knee. Compression is an art within its own right. Having good compression techniques under your belt is a huge part of making great beats and big sounds.
