Stalin Belak is a talented young Kurdish-flamenco crossover guitarist from North-Eastern Syria, one of a family of ten headed by his poet father. After making a name for himself on the Damascene music scene as a songwriter and astounding guitarist despite his disadvantaged status as an "illegal alien" (i.e. a Kurd without citizenship or identity) in Syria, he was forced to immigrate to Europe after suffering aggressive persecution at the hands of the Syrian government for being accused of spying for the West. In reality he had simply fallen in love with a British student of Arabic who was studying in Damascus and thus the couple then found themselves at the mercy of the torturous Syrian secret police. Now carving out a life for himself in Belgium, Stalin brings a breath of fresh air to the music scene, blending Middle Eastern and flamenco sounds to create a powerful, deeply evocative and heartfelt fusion of East-meets-West in his first recorded album of original songs written on the road to freedom by this master of Kurdish-flamenco guitar.
