Calming signals in dogs are used to calm themsleves, others or a situation. But can they be used by humans to calm dogs? this video shows a snapshot of a study i have just completed which suggested dogs can in fact read these signals from humans. ( i appoligise for the 3rd video, which is classed as a non calming signal to show a comparison, as i am aware it is not in the same environmnet as the others and so this may have a effect but this is a sample video. the behaviours of the dog were seen to be the same within the actual study as they are in this video)
It's interesting how they treat people out on walks too. Those who like dogs and want to interact will attract them to interact in return. They spot some people...perhaps sitting on the grass and will approach to check them out but if that person doesn't give off any signs that they want to interact, the dogs will quickly revert to acting like the person isn't there. As I know they'll leave those people alone, I let them do as they will and watch how they react to different people.

If my dogs go to get too close to my face...don't like having my face licked, I will turn it away and they will quit and turn their head away too pretty much straight away.

when using calming singals on your dog, i dont think your suppose to frezze and do them like in the vid. For example, if your dog is really hyper and you turn your back on him, chances are he will stop right then and there. For head turning its from side to side, you can also use lip licks! :) I love doing those
