Square Enix didn't change their appearance; it was Neverland themselves who did it. They rebooted the game for the new generation, and lots of people enjoy it... but it appears that you're stuck in the past. Personally, most of the fans who loved Tia were devastate when she left - myself included. I, for one, am glad she and Dekar join Maxim, Guy, Selan, and Artea.

If I remember correctly (it's been a few years since my last playthrough), Karen was Artea's wife. And Tia left your party a long time ago.
I don't know why Square Enix changed the character's appearances either. It makes zero sense. Kinda takes away from the orginial :/ makes almost as much sense as changing Dante from DMC's appearance to short, black hair :P Absolutely love that they kept the music same though.

I don't know why square enix changed this part (of course, the game too) but in first place, Tia must not to be there and second place, she never question that.
in the original Lufia 2 for the SNES, Artea is brother of Milka and Karen is mother of Milka but I don't know if Artea is son of Karen (That's my opinion).
