I moved from TF2 to LFS at the beginning of 2012. The last time I played LFS competitively was 06-07.

This video is from last night's FOX Friday championship race, the first race of the season and my first competitive race since coming back into LFS (I'm cdown in-game). It's rare to go 4 wide anywhere, but having a slower car on track meant that the three cars in the battle for 11th split and went around [CRO]Number, who had just spun after putting a tyre on the grass. The wing mirror is pretty telling.

Match report I wrote for my team's website:

So, after three years not playing LFS I am finally playing it again. I'm very happy to represent vier in LFS, this year I will mostly be competing in the Fragmaster's FOX Friday championship. I'm hoping to secure a good position in my first year back, which is why I was happy to get some points on the board in last night's race.

I started in 17th after putting in a pretty mediocre lap in qualifying. BL1R is not one of my better tracks, but 17th put me in a good enough position to have a crack at the midfield in the first few laps, which I capitalised on. With a lot of weight from the fuel in the tank and cold R2s I played it pretty safely, nonetheless I took Sami at the chicane on the first lap, and on lap 2 I overtook Eagle in exactly the same place (soon after taking R. Suur, putting me up three places into 14th). For the next 5 laps, myself, Malibu, and Al were all involved in a pretty heated battle for 11th place. On lap 8 that became even closer with Number spinning off on the back straight after putting a tyre on the grass. When he rejoined he gave the drivers in the battle for 11th a change to split after drafting and go 4 cars wide into the final chicane, which is something you don't often see (and frankly I'm amazed it didn't end in disaster). For the next few laps, I had some serious problems with my front right tyre. The inner rubber was completely overheating to about 115C, and refused to cool down (probably from locking at the end of the straight for the first few laps due to uncertainty) so I took it easier and let others have some positions back so that I could cool the tyre down and potentially get a better run for the rest of the race. On lap 12 two cars ahead of me went out in the chicane, so I regained most of the positions I lost, and my tyre was (slowly) starting to cool down again. By lap 20 the tyre was back below the threshold again, with the inner rubber slightly above the optimum temperature for R2s. On lap 28 I completely lost the rear end in the chicane, and collided pretty lightly with the barrier after skidding onto the grass, causing some suspension damage. I looked at the suspension damage over the course of lap 29 and 30, and it seemed to be okay, so I stayed out and turned off damage repair for my pit stop, as I was comfortable that the car was not really going to be a problem in this state. On lap 36 I caught leon5p at a very high speed, and overtook him for 8th place, and overtook pitters to take 7th. On lap 38 I pitted, only refuelling and putting new rubber on the car, putting me down into 12th.

On lap 48 I detoured onto the gravel trap in T1 due to loud noises on TS3 making it really difficult to concentrate on the slip rate into the corner (thanks Eagle). On lap 55 I really started to gain on Chris, until a slip after T4 put me onto the grass, having some slight damage to my left front tyre and related suspension. Thankfully I did not lose position in this crash, but it did put me out of contention to contest position. After another spin on lap 60, I was down into 11th, and was starting to suspect that maybe this suspension problem was getting worse through the race. I considered a pit stop, but doing so would really put me out of contention for the points, so I decided not to. At the end of lap 68 I overtook three cars to go into 8th. On lap 71 I realised that I had contention from the car behind me, Rony, and tried to get away; frustratingly however, in the final corner of the final lap, I had a complete replay of the incident on lap 28, and slid again into the wall. Putting me down from 8th to finish 9th.

Overall, an okay race on a track that has never been my best. I had the chance to come further up the order after my pit stop, but failed to capitalise on it due to the incidents that occurred. Hopefully in S05 next week I can secure a better finish.

  • im the poor guy that gets owned :-D

still finished 2 laps in front of you at end :P

  • @hulahopka8 Even with a completely broken nose :D Yeah, I completely screwed this race up after I pitted on lap 39.

  • Is LFS the most competitive of racing games or are there better ones? I've heard of race07 and rfactor.

  • @treboritram As someone who karted competitively in real life at one time, I personally feel that out of the three LFS provides the most realistic experience. Race 07 has real world cars, which is nice, but some of the tyre modelling feels kinda mediocre. I played rFactor once and didn't enjoy it, but I can't really explain why. That's not to say LFS isn't without flaws, but I really think the devs know what they are doing, and the attention to detail is stunning.

  • @christf2uk Have you tried iRacing? I've only ever played LFS, but I'm always on the lookout.

  • @Wofiel Wouldn't buy into that crap. The fees for iRacing are a joke.
