Synopsis!
"Billie Jean" is a dance-pop R&B song by American recording artist Michael Jackson. It was written by Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones for the singer's sixth solo album, Thriller (1982). Originally disliked by Jones, the track was almost removed from the album after he and Jackson had numerous disagreements. The song's lyrics refer to a real-life experience, in which a mentally ill female fan claimed that Jackson had fathered one of her twins. The song is well known for its distinctive bass line and Jackson's vocal hiccups. The song was mixed 91 times by Bruce Swedien before it was finalized.

Honored numerous times—including two Grammy Awards, one American Music Award and an induction into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame—the song and corresponding music video propelled Thriller into the best-selling album of all time. The song was promoted with a short film that broke down MTV's racial barrier as the first video by a black artist to be played in heavy rotation by the channel, and an Emmy-nominated performance on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, in which Jackson premiered "the moonwalk."

"Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" was a 1983 television special produced by Suzanne de Passe for Motown Records, to commemorate Motown's twenty-fifth year of existence. Michael Jackson's iconic performance of "Billie Jean", a Temptations/Four Tops "battle of the bands", Marvin Gaye's inspired speech about black music history and his memorable performance of "What's Going On", a Jackson 5 reunion, and an abbreviated reunion of Diana Ross & the Supremes, who performed their final #1 hit, "Someday We'll Be Together" from 1969.

Michael transitioned dramatically into his own solo spot. Widely hailed as Michael's breakthrough performance as a solo artist, he performed "Billie Jean", which at the time was in the middle of a seven-week run atop the Billboard Hot 100 music charts. Showcasing a dazzling display of physically demanding dance moves and piercing vocals, Jackson unleashed what would become his signature dance move - the moonwalk - to the shrieking delight of everyone in the audience and to the millions of viewers around the world.

I was at a club with my friends a few weeks ago. We're all in our mid-20's. This song came on, and we were all singing and dancing. I noticed a middle-aged guy watching us and smiling. I think he was happy to see how some legendary musicians carry over and cross the bridges of time!

I remember watching this on tv and how the news had stated that Michael had yet to confirm appearing on the show. Many of my friends and I stated that if Michael did not appear that we would boycott the show! We could not imagine having a show that year without Michael.
