Magic Flute - Tamino and The Speaker

Tamino is confronted by the Chief Druid (aka the speaker) at Stonehenge and they debate his mission.

SPEAKER: Why do you trespass on our land
And thus defile our sanctuary?
TAMINO: To fight for justice, love and truth
SPEAKER: Like all naïve and callow youth
My boy, beneath that mask of virtue
I sense a mission of revenge
Someone has filled your heart with hatred
TAMINO: I only hate injustices
SPEAKER: Our laws are just, were ruled with wisdom
TAMINO: Ive heard Sarastro is your ruler.
SPEAKER: Thats true. Sarastro is our king.
TAMINO: Hes known for cruelty and lies.
SPEAKER: He is as kind as he is wise.
TAMINO I cant believe a word you say
SPEAKER: So now youll go away?
TAMINO: Why should I stay? Lies, all lies
You are in Sarastros pay.
SPEAKER: Youre clearly prejudiced
I fear youve been deceived.
TAMINO: Youre on Sarastros team
Why should you be believed?
SPEAKER: Because I speak the truth.
Stay with me. Hear me out.
You speak ill of our king.
TAMINO: Ill hate him till I die.
SPEAKER: What childish ranting! Tell me why.
TAMINO: He is a tyrant and a brute
SPEAKER: Young man, you have no first hand knowledge
TAMINO; My eyes have seen a weeping mother
My ears have heard her sorry plight
SPEAKER: A woman scorned is filled with spite
Her tongue drips poison to incite
You have no proof that she is right
What makes you think she hasnt lied?.
You havent heard Sarastros side.
TAMINO: What he has done cant be denied
He stole Pamina out of malice
Abducted from her mothers palace
SPEAKER: Pamina was indeed removed
TAMINO: He snatched her! What I said is proved




Where is she now? In some dank cell?.
SPEAKER: For what its worth, I think shes well
But where shes kept, I cannot tell.
TAMINO: Why cant you tell me, here and now
SPEAKER: A priest is silenced by his vow
TAMINO: How can I ever find Pamina?
SPEAKER: If you are brave and persevere
In time the mystery will come clear.
(He exits)
TAMINO: Oh endless night that sires confusion
When will it come to some conclusion?
VOICES OFF: Soon. Soon. Patience. Linger here.
