Steel Meat Hooks in Human Flesh!

As steel hooks penetrate his "inked-up" back, blood trickles down making the back tattoo of a face look like its crying tears of blood. The crowd is astonished but John Wayne simply looks on as chains are linked to the hooks and tugged repeatedly causing his skin to stretch and contort.

This is part of rare performance in Grahamstown South Africa where club goers are treated to a bloody spectacle. At the body modification party, the Ink Saints pierce, pull and even hang for the entertainment of the crowd that gathers around them at the Slip Stream Sports bar.

The three starring Ink Saints of the modification show are John Wayne, Black Armed Burt and Calypso Ray and they all play their part to stun the audience.

Black Armed Burt

'Black Armed Burt', a "needle-happy" tattooist, has made a career out of body modifying his friends. If he is not tattooing by day at the "Ink Saints Headquarters" then he is getting ready to drive massive steel hooks into his fellow ink saint John Wayne.

Burt thrives when being watched by the crowd and entertains them with fire balls that he produces by sucking on a butane bottle and spitting it out onto an open flame. After the flames almost engross him more than once he is ready to put down the lighter and manage the modification show. He falls into a 'boss' role by shouting brief instructions to all involved. As he sterilizes the instruments, John Wayne falls into his meditation session and Calypso Ray takes off her clothes.

Calypso Ray

Calypso Ray is currently Burt's girlfriend and student at Rhodes University. With her neon purple Mohawk and minimal clothing however she turns into a 'rock-metal' entertainer as she walks around taking pictures of the crowd and interacts with them on the topic of the night: body modification.

When Burt is ready, she takes her seat on the stage with her back in full view of the crowd for Burt to start working on. By the end of the hour, the ribbon and steel earrings lying next to her will all be sewn firmly down her back to form a corset and even if she is nervous she doesn't show it as she takes a sip of a soda and puts her head down as the piercing kit comes out.

John Wayne

John Wayne is a piercing artist at the Ink Saints office and covered from top to bottom in partial to fully completed tattoos he is a walking piece of art.

He meditates with his girlfriend before the party starts by listening to music and closing his eyes as the stage is set up around him. John Wayne has prepared for the night by not drinking or smoking for two weeks and tried to be as healthy as possible to ensure a full strength during the suspension.

By the time Calypso Ray is "tied up" he is ready to take the stage with his girlfriend to be "hooked" for suspension.
