I supose that in the old times, the poor people in China (and even those who weren't that poor) who couldn't afford other kind of stuff or just didn't have anything near them to use, they used chopsticks.. it's not that weird or funny.. it's just an easy way to 'tie' your hair (i don't know the proper expression, I'm from Spain). And it's the same that we used to do here: years ago, we used handkerchief and worn clothes to put in our hair, but not now. It's not that heavy.
