本曲是广东音乐发展初期的代表曲目之一，当初曾以《走马英雄》作为曲名,由传统乐曲《大开门》改编、演变而成。乐曲节奏明快，旋律活泼，生动地描绘了骏马行走时轻捷可爱的­形象，也宣示出骑师驾御奔马、催骑追逐，驰骋在广阔草原上的兴奋情绪。演奏要轻快、明朗和运弓有力。
由董坚（高胡）领奏，天津群艺民族乐团和天津南苑粤乐社协奏，指挥：张洪江。
