@bear47401 This is my favorite movie of all time. Warren Beatty did such a good job. And he was making a huge political statement against Republican Reagan. This movie premiered shortly after Reagan became president. But politics aside it is a great movie with great performances.

The reason why this scene still strikes me as one of the most thrilling and moving scenes I have ever seen in a film (even after 30 years) is not at all the politics of the October Revolution, but the fact that one has the sense of the excitement of actually being a participant in a major historical event, even as one's own life path and one's own close relationships are being transformed. This is brilliant film making.

This is a great movie,an epic, and will have to see it again, the making of war into a glory state, killing of humans and horses is not what we wont but it is there the truth is Warren is /was a very smart man,and this movie made Diane into a drama actress..and i love them both.

Although artistically well done, this film is really nothing more than a slick propoganda piece glorifying a discredited and morally bankrupt ideology.

Leaders don't even need to come into the discussion. The strength of the revolution from a workers' perspective came from the organization of the soviets. The famines resulting from the war and the loss of Ukraine to Germany did more to undermine the soviets in Petrograd than any authoritarian communists did. It just gave them an opportunity.
But one can never overestimate the importance of the civil war on the outcome of the revolution. War transforms society.

@anarksee that was all sooooo LAST CENTURY.

@forloveoffilm yes because it was that pivot in history. before Lenin and Trotsky. they had a utopian five minutes and it went to hell and worse with Stalin, but Beatty sure made a good looking picture, also in light of the Sutton books, John Read was no journalist....wow I have to see this picture again, what is he saying?????
-
@donwert the movie is about those five minutes. History teacher told us they had a great time for less than ten years then it went to hell worse than it was. Marx could not feed his own family, but he could write well, in short does not work......but Beatty paid somebody to shoot some good pictures, have to take the film apart now that I have read Sutton.
-
@mpgingdl John Reed is there NOT as a reporter as I was taught but a rabble rouser. Beatty shows the five minutes that it was great then it went to hell and stalin, sad history.
@johnross12 You are not too bright! I suppose murdering Slavs, Jews, Gypsies or any minority is cool with you
More than 20 million Russians were killed in WW2. You are an apologist for fascism, imperialism, and your hatred of everyday people is appalling.

I don't get why people are talking about who would have been the greater leader. I though communism was about abolishing all leaders?
