Compression test on North aspect 20degree slope at 6000' East of Sheep Mountain (lower Blackfoot). This condition is widespread in West Central MT. On wind loaded terrain steeper than 35 degrees, you can probably trigger a slab avalanche avalanche that would have serious consequences. This is a tricky snowpack in many areas. Be suspicious of any steep open slope especially in areas near rock bands, outcrops or where the snow is shallow.

  • That is NOT good. The condition shown here was pretty widespread in our area last year. We were calling the avy danger CONDSIDERABLE based on this and similar observations in other areas.

  • so is that good?
