Remembering...one of the coolest historical events of my life time...
Influenced by Flash Gordon & Buck Rogers movies & the short lived 1950s tv show..the concept of space exploration - landing on distant planets was not out of the realm of possibilities...for a lot of us boomers - it was not a matter of 'if' but one of 'when'...

That said, I was glued to the tv...covered with goose bumps from head to toe...watching the most awesome event in my life time...

I never felt prouder of my country than at that moment & felt anything was possible for the future. I remember holding my infant son and saying, "Maybe someday you will be an astronaut"

  • Very well done ! When I was young, I got to sit in John Glenn's "space ship" looking back it must have been Friendship 7, it was so small that I remember feeling claustrophobic, (My Step Father was a flight instructor) While I remember the moon landing on TV, I have a more vivid memory of sitting outside just looking up at the moon afterward.

  • Thanks Nota...

Wow - that is so cool (not the claustrophobic part) ;P

I have opposite of claustrophobia - so I'd felt all snuggy.

  • What an exciting moment for the world. Walter Cronkite, an iconic figure.

The Space program of late has faltered. I wonder if we will ever reach that level of excitement and optimism for the future again. Maybe when man lands on Mars.

  • Sorta sad, isn't it?

    Maybe you're right about Mars...

  • I have faint memories of it. During the telecast my grandfather took me outside to look at the moon, and I could have sworn I saw them from the front porch (the power of persuasion) .

    : D

  • Joseph, I bet you did see them! Age 4, grandfather taught me to color & draw. Because of him AND my grandmother encouraging & believing in me, that I'm who I am today, an artist. Like you, I was grandmother's favorite, she nurtured my imagination & creativity until she passed at age 93. I believe they gave me the gift to see the world in a very special way. ;)
