English composer Gustav Holst composed The Planets between 1914 and 1916. The Birmingham premiere of the suite took place in 1918, fifteen years before Pluto was discovered. Though the Planets became by far the most popular work of Holst's and one of the most known pieces by an English-born composer, Holst did not consider the piece one of his finest. Partially because of this, he never wrote an eighth movement, though unexpectedly the IAU relegated Pluto from its status as planet proper in 2006.

  • :snort: A hack? See, folks. You become a musician and a composer, one of the most thankless things for all the hard work it takes and you are disrespected for the most trivial things. Of course, seeing as Williams has world acclaim, I doubt he honestly cares what us worms think. He hit El Dorado.

  • HOW and WHY is Lady Gaga in the suggestion list for this?!? Why does she always have to bring me down when I'm listening to truley beautiful music... sigh

I think it's good to expand your mind, not just for the sake of music, but for humanity. Music elevates the spirit of their composures.

I can't place this song... is it MERCURY? I've only listened to this a bit and recently. No... NEPTUNE

    MARS - So thematic

JUPITER - Complex relative to the other planets, the big guy having a laugh

NEPTUNE - Like an effervescent shimmer, afraid to touch, afraid to break

    i didn't like SATURN, n it's my favourite planet.

  • are you scared of the dark. if you off switch all the lights and listen to this in the dark. nothing but the music scary stuff

  • @blondiepianist When it comes to tonal composition it's very difficult to be original. I mean, how much more of a visionary do you have to be to create masterful programmatic compositions that seemed perfect for Film a good 9-10 years before the concept had been made publicly commercial. Sound in Film occurred roughly in 1923. Planets- 19-14. If you listen to the entire suite you can hear Star Wars, Looney Tunes, Indiana Jones, The Legend of Zelda, Harry Potter..countless.

  • @aixelsydyslexia how drunk were you when you wrote this?

  • This music is so haunting. It is both calm and mysterious and is the perfect thing to listen to before you go to bed. Words of advice: NEVER listen to this while driving late at night!

  • I'm a DJ. I'm a Green Day, Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage and Sum 41 fan. But I don't know why, I'm in love with this song. Maybe because I'm a guy that make video games and it can be perfect on a cutscene, or in a boring exploration mode into the dark forest ...

I know! I love this movement! It is definitive space music!
