An antibiotic treatment given to save children's eyesight is actually saving their lives. In Ethiopia's Amhara region, where 60 percent of children suffer from trachoma, The Carter Center -- with regional and international partners -- supports mass drug administration including Zithromax®, donated by Pfizer Inc. Antibiotics administered for trachoma, a bacterial eye infection that is the world's leading preventable cause of blindness, are treating other ailments and reducing Ethiopia's high rates of child mortality.

The Carter Center, in partnership with Emory University, is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering. Founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, the Atlanta-based Center has helped to improve the quality of life for people in more than 70 countries.
