Stefan Hammond: MC and production
Marc Anderson: drums
Bob Hughes: bass
Steve Tibbetts: guitar

I think this was shot in 1977.

At this point in time Stefan Hammond was the Biggest Fan of the burgeoning new wave/punk movement in Minneapolis. Here is something he wrote about that time.

He was also the Most Visible, being about 9 feet tall, and the Most Enthusiastic Dancer. That meant that when bands like The Suburbs and the Suicide Commandos played at the Longhorn bar, and Stefan was dancing, and Enthusiastic, you had to be on your toes.

Stefan was taking a video class at Rarig Center at the University of Minnesota and, like his fellow students, was asked to conceive and execute a video project. Most of his classmates took on subjects like "The Perfect Soufflé" or "My Grandfather's Story." Stefan asked us to write a nice, friendly acoustic thing, and an evil, menacing electric thing. Bob wrote the nice acoustic thing. We just jammed menacingly for the evil thing. He didn't tell us much about the script except that he was going to jump in at the end and put a drum on his head and I was to pound it with a drumstick, but I goofed up my cue.

That was the last time I wore the combo of bell-bottoms, a ponytail, and my girlfriend's gauzy shirt.

  • This and other Steve Tibbetts videos you've posted are priceless. Thank you so much. Tibbetts concerts are rare and far between. I've never been to his concerts, but have all his albums. I first heard his music in 1984 on a University Of Pennsylvania radio show called Totally Wired. I've been hooked to his music ever since. I hope he swings by Philadelphia one of these days. Thanks again for posting!

  • I'm getting on the next bus to Minneapolis.

  • I would love to know the story behind this video.

  • Wonderful. the whole gamut. Have still got Tibbetts on vinyl from 1984- Bye Bye Safe Journey- and today, I'm celebrating my sons delivery of a 12 string- where better to go listen to 12 string than ST... on ECM....

  • Beautifully awesome on so many levels. Ya gotta dig those roots...

  • wow.. pretty wild.... shame the bass is all but inaudible. Tibbetts was really\

shredding here....that MC was pretty out there.

  • music is fun-da-mental. roots of genius.

  • A pity there wasn't a loop made of the drum on Stefan's head... that could have easily been inserted somewhere, like Alien Lounge or something.

  • would love to see more footage of the "Shiva" band...thanks for posting this gem!

  • Predicts Tibbetts whole career.
