Calf implants are yours for life, or until you want to take them out. They are a semi rigid silicone prosthesis that is placed below the muscle lining in the calf region. The incision is made just behind the knee and the implant is slid through the incision into the pocket that has been created just above the muscle, but below the muscle lining.

Are calf implants ideal for people with thin ankles? My ankles are not only thin, but shaped like a pipe and I have high calves. Can the calf implant be put lower to make it look as though I have low calves? Is there a custom made implant for this purpose?

Calf implants would be ideal for people with thin ankles as there is a more obvious progression to the calf muscle...obviously, the right implant makes all the difference. Calf implants are divided into various sizes (small, medium, large) and are selected to meet the patient's need. The implant itself is inserted through an incision behind the knee and a pocket is then created beneath the muscle covering (fascia).

@drchugay So calf implants are in fact ideal for people with thin ankles? I was just scared the implant might make the ankle look worse. I wish you didn't live so far away from me so you could take a look because I know you are an expert.

Princess...thanks for your response... As I said, the best patient is one that can show contrast and a cut off between the calf and ankle.
