Drunt' in der Lobau (Down There, In Lobau) (Heinrich Strecker) -- Zigeunerprimas Lajos Kiss mit Orchester (A Gypsy Primate Lajos Kiss & His Orchestra) Ultraphon ca 1930 (German product)

NOTE: Heinrich Strecker was an Austrian composer, born in 1893 in Vienna (d. 1981). He was educated in Belgium. His early talent for music led to private lessons and he gained a high level of proficiency on the violin. He returned to Vienna in 1910 and after the First World War concentrated on composing. He became known as a composer of operetta, film music and Viennese songs of which "Drunt' in der Lobau" is one of the most famous.

It is a nostalgic song, a memory of youth--a woman tries to recall the place where her first love kissed her. She returns to the Lobau to look for it , but cannot find it. (The Lobau is a beautiful rural area on the Danube on the outskirts of Vienna). All that is left are the wonderful memories, nightingales were singing, happiness laughed from a thousand branches, and they dreamt of everlasting love. Hugely popular, the song has received many different arrangements and can often be heard being played by small ensembles in Viennese cafes and coffee houses.

  • You know I have a weakness for "schmaltzy" Hungarian gypsy music; this vid confirms my sentimental addiction in a lovely way. I used to imagine I had a gypsy ancestor or two. Thanks!

  • @barbcard What can be more schmaltzy than a Gypsy violine playing its sweet tremolos right by your ear, in a candlelight in a cafe in Wien, in year 1900? Yet, I advice you to go into my favorites and see a performance of the Romanian gypsy boys dance ensamble, I just saved not long ago. They are really gorgeous, and there';s not a drop of a schmaltz in what they're doing!

  • @ 240252

thank you very much for uploading that! its my grandfather's playing and it is very rare to find it today!!! Now I am very happy to listen his wonderful music! thanks!

  • PS : The video I mentioned is called 'Nationalpark Donauauen " - I hope it is

    of interest ...

  • As a boy I grew up right at the edge of the beautiful wetlands ( now a National Park ) known as the Lobau , spending my free time fishing, roaming the woods.

or just skylarking - a regular Huckleberry Finn. Now I'm an old man and, having

lived in Australia for some 50 years, this song brings back some wonderful memories, in whatever version. There is even a very good one on Youtube

sung by Heinrich Strecker himself - not a bad voice either ! - Thank you for uploading - look for my Lobau video.

  • This is a superb Gipsy piece by the great Lajos Kiss, thank you for sharing this gem!

  • Hello Grzegorz - I - normally - really like the Gypsy music - especially their ballads, romances but - of course - the Gypsy flavored Tangos - are gorgeous. It seems to me that the Russians boast the most talented Gypsy musicians - or - at least - they used to. Thanks for this lovely piece!!!
