Addressing the United Nations for the first time in more than 50 years, Queen Elizabeth II today lauded the world body for its many achievements and urged it to continue playing its lead role in the cause of peace and prosperity for all.

"In my lifetime, the United Nations has moved from being a high-minded aspiration to being a real force for common good," the British monarch, who was accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, told the General Assembly.

  • @mebemichael1 - that whole notion that the royal family "German" is absurd (aren't all British people descended from northern European tribes anyway?). Elizabeth comes from an unbroken line that stretches back more than a 1000 years, and her ancestors were almost all English. If they weren't, they were themselves descended from English people. See the Wikipedia article "ancestry of Elizabeth II".

  • The monarch is a fasinating thing and can be very useful at times. All that wisdom and knowledge is priceless, she has governed hand in hand with numerous PMs who have been elected by the people for decades, no Prime Minister or President can match that level of wisdom and knowledge. It's not about nationalism, the risk of tyranny or gold crowns, it about having that priceless wisdom and knowledge there at the top where it can fully flourish and be best made use of.

  • I just love to see the similarities of the two occasions (nice editing on that note).

  • I hear the "royal family ", is german. I also hear that God puts kings in their places. If this is true, then why do we have presidents, instead of kings, citizens, instead of subjects. Which reminds me, I heard Jefferson erased subjects, and replaced that word with citizens, on some important document. And while I'm thinking about it, does "government" really mean mind control?
